A. O. Smith Corporation is an American company that manufactures both residential and commercial water heaters and boilers. It is the largest producer and marketer of water heaters in North America and also provides water treatment products in the Asian market. The corporation operates 24 facilities worldwide, including five manufacturing plants in North America, along with facilities in Bengaluru, India; Nanjing, China; and Veldhoven, The Netherlands.
Over the years, A. O. Smith has been involved in a variety of industries. By the end of World War I, it was the largest bomb manufacturer in the United States, and during World War II, it ranked 74th among U.S. corporations in the value of military production contracts.
In 1940, the company acquired Sawyer Electric of Los Angeles, California, a manufacturer of electric motors. In 1942, it once again shifted to wartime production, manufacturing bomb casings, aircraft propellers, undercarriages, torpedoes, and air flasks. By 1945, its production totals included 4.5 million bombs, 16,750 sets of landing gear, and 46,700 propeller blades. The company also produced nose frames for the B-25 bomber, water heaters, jeep frames, and parts for the atomic bomb project.
In 1946, A. O. Smith built a 400,000-square-foot residential water heater plant in Kankakee, Illinois, which also produced water heaters under the Kenmore brand. In 1948, it entered the commercial water heater market by acquiring The Burkay Company of Toledo, Ohio. A year later, the company introduced Harvestore, a glass-fused-to-steel silo designed for dairy and livestock operations.
In the 1950s, A. O. Smith purchased Whirl-A-Way Motors of Dayton, Ohio, and consolidated its motor production there. The Motor Division later introduced the hermetic motor, a key component for air conditioning and refrigeration compressors. Meanwhile, the water heater division launched the first glass-lined commercial water heater, the A. O. Smith Burkay B-65. The company also established a glass fiber division to replace steel in various applications and expanded into producing oil field pipe and service station pipe, which eventually became Smith Fiberglass Products in 1986.
During the early 1960s, A. O. Smith opened a commercial water heater and boiler facility in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. In 1965, the Motor Division developed the enclosed canopy, two-compartment motor, which increased reliability in pool pump motors by separating switching components from motor windings. In 1967, Lloyd B. Smith, a fourth-generation family member, became chairman and CEO. By 1969, the company had produced its 10 millionth residential water heater, and in 1972, it expanded operations into Europe. In 1974, A. O. Smith introduced the Conservationist line of residential water heaters. Two years later, the Motor Division opened a plant in Bray, Ireland, to produce hermetic motors. In 1978, the company began manufacturing storage tanks, starting with the Aquastore, a glass-fused-to-steel tank.
